Homeward Bound

by Gary W. Anderson

Far across the galaxy

There's a planet that shimmers blue.

It is a home I had to flee

As monstrous weapons slew.

They were weapons of mass destruction

That none could any longer control,

Caused by an evil seduction—

A seduction to steal the soul.

In a panic I shot for space,

Not knowing what I might find,

Only hoping the memory to erase

And to replace it with one more kind.

But the memories did not leave,

And the nightmares only became worse.

And I still don't know what we did to receive

Such a devastating curse.

But one question keeps entering my mind

As I look out across space:

Are there any left of my kind,

Or am I the last of my race?

I know that I must now depart

To return to my place of birth,

And I pray with all my heart

I'll find something left of Earth.
